### Lesson Plan: Basic Science and Technology
**Topic: Launching and Saving Documents on Microsoft Word**
**Grade: Primary 3**
#### Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Launch Microsoft Word on a computer.
2. Create a new document in Microsoft Word.
3. Save a document with an appropriate file name.
#### Materials Needed:
1. Computers with Microsoft Word installed (one per student or one shared per a small group of students).
2. Projector and computer for teacher demonstration.
3. Whiteboard and markers.
4. Printed step-by-step handouts on launching and saving documents on Microsoft Word.
#### Lesson Outline:
**Introduction (10 minutes)**
- **Greeting and Warm-Up:** Greet students and ask if they know what Microsoft Word is and what it is used for.
- **Objective Overview:** Briefly explain what the students will learn and why it is important to know how to use Microsoft Word.
**Teacher Demonstration (15 minutes)**
1. **Launching Microsoft Word:**
- Show students how to find and click on the Microsoft Word icon on the computer’s desktop or in the Start menu.
2. **Creating a New Document:**
- Demonstrate how to create a new blank document by selecting "New" and then "Blank Document".
3. **Saving a Document:**
- Type a short sentence or two in the document.
- Show students how to save the document by clicking on "File" and then "Save As".
- Explain how to choose a location (e.g., Desktop, Documents folder), type a file name, and click "Save".
**Guided Practice (20 minutes)**
- **Students Follow Along:**
- Have students turn on their computers and assist them in launching Microsoft Word.
- Guide them step by step to create a new document as shown earlier.
- Provide a simple sentence you want them to type in their document.
- Walk them through saving the document with the correct procedure.
- **Circulate and Assist:** Move around the room to provide assistance and ensure all students are following along correctly.
**Independent Practice (10 minutes)**
- **Tasks for Students:**
- Ask students to create another new document on their own and write a short paragraph (2-3 sentences) about their favorite animal or activity.
- Have them save the document using a new file name.
**Closing (5 minutes)**
- **Recap and Review:**
- Quickly go over the main steps again:
1. How to launch Microsoft Word.
2. How to create a new document.
3. How to save a document.
- **Q&A Session:** Allow students to ask any questions they might have.
- **Homework Assignment:** Assign students to create a new document at home, write three sentences about their day, save it with a proper file name, and bring the saved document file to class the next day (on a flash drive or email it to the teacher if feasible).
#### Assessment:
- **Observation:** Observe students during guided and independent practice to ensure they are able to follow the steps correctly.
- **Completed Document:** Check that each student has successfully created and saved a document by the end of the lesson.
- **Q&A Participation:** Gauge understanding through student participation in the Q&A session.
#### Differentiation:
- **Support:** Provide extra assistance to students who are struggling, possibly pairing them with a peer to guide them.
- **Extension:** For advanced students, introduce additional features such as formatting text (changing font, size, and color) and saving in different file formats (e.g., .docx vs. .pdf).
By implementing this lesson plan, Primary 3 students will gain basic skills in using Microsoft Word, which is foundational for future technological proficiency.
